The First AI Inventory Robot Unveiled in Huaqiao University Library in Xiamen City

Xiamen Branch Campus of Huaqiao University Library is in Xiamen City, with a floor space of 21,600 square meters. The collections reach around 5.02 million printed books, periodicals, and electronic resources, over 1,671 Chinese and foreign current periodicals, and 92 Chinese and foreign database resources.

Challenge

Up until today, inventory and sorting have been tedious and manual tasks, which are done totally by library staff. Staff say these tasks are unimaginably dread as they need to ensure the ongoing agreement between the physical collection and its documented status. The robot employs a lidar sensor, depth camera, etc. to gather the image data, and transmit them to the dashboard for further analysis. In that way, faculty can easily get the list of misplaced items, lost items, and more from the dashboard, and then correct the shelf quickly. The robot can work effortlessly around the clock, or start stocktaking within the preset schedule. It is a game changer that saves tons of time for staff and gives them to do valuable service. Making the stuff more accessible to more people is the ultimate goal of the library, but finding the books was always hard for the visitors.
